What a great last week before break. We celebrated International Happiness Day with a wonderful assembly from BMX biker, Matt Wilhelm. The students loved watching his tricks and hearing his message about perseverance, being kind to others and how to stop bullying. We also had our annual Community Celebration on Thursday where we had 76 students win prizes for learning about good decision making and conflict resolution. I hope you have a great Spring Break and we look forward to seeing students back in April.

Principal’s Message – February 22, 2019

What a great week at Muir! Over the past several weeks, many of our classrooms have taken “virtual field-trips” using our VR goggles. Some classes have visited Ancient China while others explored Ellis Island. Ask your child if they have gone on a trip and if not, they will soon! We are so excited to add this resource to our classroom experiences for students. Please see below for information in the Muir community.

Wednesday, February 27-Dress to Impress Day
Wednesday, March 20-Orange Day

Wednesday, May 29-Mix and Match Day

Arrival/Dismissal
Due to the large number of students who walk to and from school each day, we close our parking lot to cars. The parking lot closes each day at 8:20 and reopens at 8:40. In the afternoon, it closes at 2:50 and reopens at 3:10. During those times, we limit cars moving in order to maintain safety. Also, due to the large number of students dismissing at once, we ask that older siblings picking up students for grades 3-6 wait at the gate of the entrance to the parking lot.

5Essentials Survey
District 54 will again be participating in the 5Essentials Survey. We value this information as a tool to help us continue to improve. We will only receive the results from the parent survey if at least 20 percent of our parents take the survey. The 5Essentials survey now includes fourth- through eighth-grade students. The parent survey will be available online through March 15, 2019, at https://survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois.

English Learner (EL) Kindergarten Information Night
If your child is entering kindergarten and you speak another language at home, we would like to invite you to attend the EL Kindergarten Information Night, Tuesday, February 26th. The program will take place from 6:00-7:00 p.m. at the Professional Learning Center, 524 E. Schaumburg Road. Childcare is available for ages 3 and up.
During the evening, you will have the opportunity to learn more about the programs for English Learner Kindergarten students, Dual Language Programs in District 54 and the language assessment process. If you, or someone you know, will have a student attending Kindergarten in September, we hope that you will join us for this informative night.
