About Muir

John Muir Elementary School serves approximately 400 students in kindergarten through sixth grade. Muir has been serving the community since 1972. We have a diverse student body with about half of Muir students speaking a language other than English as their first language. There are nearly 40 languages spoken at Muir. Our diversity provides many opportunities for our students to learn about other cultures and to grow academically.

Developing the literacy skills of our students remains one of our top focuses at Muir. Using a balanced approach to literacy, students spend time every day working with the District’s core literacy series focusing on the Common Core State Standards. Each day students have guided reading, shared reading, writing, guided writing, read aloud, word work, and silent reading time.

All teaching spaces in the building have been wired to accommodate Chromebooks, iPads, laptop computers, printers, and interactive monitors. Our staff and students can draw upon the support of a principal, an assistant principal, and support staff including ELL teachers, special services teachers, a psychologist, a social worker, a speech and language therapist, a nurse, secretaries, and custodians.

Beyond the classroom, Muir offers an array of extracurricular activities. There are over thirty after-school club offerings.
